Calder was created by the mad scientist Dr. Loboto, who spliced his DNA with that of a lungfish in an attempt to add a new member to his army of mutant lungfish. However, Calder's gentle nature and anxious personality led to Dr. Loboto abandoning that plan. Instead, Dr. Loboto decided to keep the young hybrid around to assist in the lab alongside Sheegor.

After the explosion that destroyed Thorney Towers (and, by extension, Loboto's lab), Psychonaut agents Sasha Nein and Milla Vodello, along with young Psychonauts-in-training Razputin Aquato and Lili Zonatto, rescued Calder from the rubble.

Now, Calder works part-time at Whispering Rock Psychic Summer Camp as a counselor, where he teaches kids how to swim and the basics of hydrokinesis. He's also part of the intern program at Psychonauts Headquarters, where he is learning to refine his psychic abilities with the hope of one day joining the Psychonauts as an agent, just like the ones who saved his life.
